λ A RARE SET OF CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN ‘SILK PRODUCTION’ PANELS, MOUNTED AS A SIX-FOLD SCREEN, THE PORCELAIN QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY清 十九世纪青花瓷屏嵌丝制工藝场景瓷板一組Each of the twenty-four porcelain panels finely painted in rich cobalt-blue tones with a scene of silk production, each leaf of the rosewood screen inset with a fan-shaped, square, quatrefoil and circular panelEach folding panel of the screen:Height: 181cmWidth: 44cmWhile rearing silkworms was women’s work inside the house, men cultivated grain outside in the fields. In accordance with theories of Chinese classical government, every year the emperor and empress would open the season for agriculture and sericulture in state rituals. The scenes are part of an album Yuzhi gengzhi tu (Imperially Commissioned Illustrations of Agriculture and Sericulture)with 46 illustrations on the cultivation of grain and silk ,commissioned by the Kangxi emperor (1662 - 1722). All of the porcelain panels are in good condition. The rosewood frame overall is good, however there is some movement/shrinkage to the panels in keeping with its age: Panel 1: left to right 1: Fan shaped panel, 26cm by 14cm approx, in good condition, age related crack to rosewood panel 2: Square shaped panel, two ladies and a child sorting silk cocoons, 21cm by 22cm, in good condition, splits to rosewood panel. 3: Quatre-lobed panel, depicting two women and a child, with trays of cocoons, beside a river, man crossing a bridge, 19cm by 26cm, rosewood panel slightly slipped in frame. 4: Circular panel depicting a riverside pagoda, with three ladies and two boys, inspecting yarn hung from rafters, 25cm by 25cm, two old splits to left hand side of panel Reverse: splits evident and some shrinkage to frame work. Panel 2 5: Fan shaped panel depicting two men operating an archenemies screw, another man emptying water from pond, rosewood panel slipped down from top edge. 6: Square panel, courtyard scene, two ladies sifting cocoons, yarn hung behind, a female attendant approaches with two bolts of silk under her arm, two old splits to rosewood. 7: Quatre-lobed panel, lady on day bed, with two others inspecting trays of silk worms by candlelight, panel slipped in frame, two old age cracks to right hand side. 8: Circular panel, three ladies inspecting trays in a pagoda, another two bringing a jar from bamboo grove, old splits to rosewood to either side, 26cm by 26cm Panel 3 9: Three workmen thrashing leaves accompanied by one other seated, old split to left hand side of panel, 27cm by 14cm 10: Square panel depicting ladies by candlelight inspecting trays of cocoons, four old splits to rosewood panel. 11: Quatre-lobed panel, depicting two men and water buffalo in a field, one old split to rosewood panel, 25cm by 18cm 12: Circular panel depicting two ladies on a terrace inspecting baskets of cocoons 24cm by 24cm, the rosewood ok. Rear: each panel showing old age related splits, top panel slipped in frame, third and fourth too. Panel 4 13: Fan shaped, depicting a lady and child, drying yarn, a boy and water buffalo. Rosewood panel slipped in frame. 14: Square shaped, depicting two ladies on a terrace with two workers transplanting rice in a field, moulding to frame re-stuck, old age crack to rosewood on the right hand side, 22cm by 22cm 15: Quatre-lobed, depicting a man and water buffalo in a field, compound behind, 25cm by 18cm, rosewood with old split to right hand side. 16: Circular panel, with three men working in a field, section of rosewood moulding missing to mount. Two old age cracks to panel. Rear: each panel with age related splits….top panel slipped in frame. Panel 5 17: Fan shaped panel, three male figures loading baskets in warehouse, rosewood panel slipped, old age crack to left side, 26cm by 14cm 18: Square shaped, depicting a lady in interior with two boys at a table, 21cm by 21cm, two old age cracks to rosewood panel. 19: Quatre-lobed panel depicting two ladies and a boy winding yarn, rosewood panel slipped in frame. 20: Circular depicting a man and buffalo, 26cm by 26cm, two related age cracks to rosewood panel, slipped to left side of frame. Rear: each of the rear panels with age related splits, the top panel slipped, likewise the third. Panel 6 21: Fan shaped, three ladies winding silk yarn, 26cm by 14cm, rosewood panel slipped in frame, one age related crack to right hand side. 22: Square shaped panel depicting lady and attendant inspecting a basket and yarn. 22cm by 22cm, slip to rosewood panel, two old age related cracks to rosewood. 23: Quatre-lobed panel, depicting two men loading baskets, watched by a lady and dog, 26 by 19cm, slip to rosewood panel in frame, one age related crack to left side. 24: Circular panel depicting man tending a rice field watched by a woman and child. 26 by 26cm, the rosewood with one old age related crack to right side. The rear on panel top panel slipped in frame, an age related crack to left side, the second panel slipped in frame, an age related crack to right side of frame, the third and fourth panel slipped in frames. Overall in good condition, for its age and weight!
