AN EXTREMELY RARE DERBY MODEL OF A MONKEY, C1770, CROUCHING ON A LOG AND CLOTHED IN A YELLOW AND ORANGE JERKIN PAINTED WITH PLAYING CARDS, 52MM HApparently unrecorded in the Derby literature, another model is in the collection at Burghley House (ref: CER0673). That example is naked save for a narrow red collar. Playing cards were occasionally employed as a decorative motif on Derby porcelain in the early 19th c, whether painted in isolation or as a trompe l'oeil. The inspiration for this model by contrast is the commedia dell'arte that so inspired Kaendler at Meissen and other practitioners of the fine and decorative arts, with all it's colour, masked entertainers, comical antics and playing card inspired motley garb Condition report In fine preservation, no restoration
