Liberty Double Eagles 1861-O $20 XF45 NGC. Variety 1

Liberty Double Eagles
1861-O $20 XF45 NGC. Variety 1 Always popular as the final double eagle issue struck at the New Orleans Mint until 1879, the 1861-O had a total mintage of only 17, 741 pieces struck under three different authorities: The Union, the State of Louisiana, and the Confederacy. Most examples are weakly struck to start with, and they endured heavy circulation with numerous bagmarks from handling during the early Civil War years. The 1861-O twenties -- like all Civil War gold -- were hoarded and later melted during the post-war years. This is a Choice XF survivor, with the date weakly struck and lightly abraded surfaces. Prooflike reflectivity remains in isolated areas at the margins and within the shield stripes, with pleasing orange-gold color throughout both sides. Census: 21 in 45, 74 finer (7/23). From The Samuel Winans Collection.
