At the time of assay the owner of the arms was Sir James COCKBURN (1729-1804) 8th Baronet the son of Sir Alexander COCKBURN (1710-1739) 6th Baronet by Mary ANCRUM. He married twice: Firstly in 1755 Mary DOUGLAS (died 1766) daughter of Henry DOUGLAS of Friarshaw; Secondly in 1769 Augusta Anne ASYCOUGH daughter of Francis ASYCOUGH (1701-1763) Dean of Bristol and tutor to George III, by Anne LYTTLETON. Sir James was MP for Linlithgow 1772-84 and a director of the East India Company. Notably he had four sons: Sir James COCKBURN (1771-1852) 9th Baronet; Sir George COCKBURN 10th Baronet (1772-1853); Sir William COCKBURN 11th Baronet (1773-1858); Alexander COCKBURN (1776-1852).
