1909 $20 MS65 PCGS. The 1909 Saint-Gaudens double eagle splits a reported mintage of 161,282 pieces with its 1909/8 counterpart. Based on research by Roger Burdette, seven obverse and twelve reverse dies were created for 1909 twenty dollar production. Two reverse dies were not used, however.
The 1909 has never been fully appreciated for the conditionally scarce coin that it truly is, despite the hoard of a few hundred pieces discovered in the early 1980s that made lower Mint State coins more available. This issue can be located through MS63 with patience and searching, but near-Gems are scarce and higher-grade examples are very difficult to come by. Indeed, PCGS and NGC have certified just 27 examples in MS65, and 11 specimens finer (10/23). A number of these are undoubtedly resubmitted coins in the hope of achieving a higher grade.
The lustrous, yellow-gold surfaces of this Gem exhibit sharply-struck design elements. Liberty's facial features, fingers on both hands, and toes are bold, as are the panes of the Capitol building and the eagle's plumage. A few minute marks are consistent with the designated grade, and the only alloy spot is light in hue and located just below the CA in AMERICA. This is a pleasing specimen that will capture the attention of collectors of Saint-Gaudens coinage. Population: 24 in 65 (5 in 65+), 7 finer (10/23).
