Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) - Letter - an important Gandhi letter, written in Guajarati: ' Dear Sister, Manibahen has sent the message that Sunita had given birth to baby boy and both of them are well. We can realise your happiness from here too. Much blessings from Bapu ' The mentioned 'Manibahen' relates to Manibahen Patel - daughter of freedom fighter and post-Independence Indian leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. She adopted the teachings of Gandhi in 1918 and started working regularly at his ashram in Ahmedabad. Written in blue ink to a single folded sheet of paper, complete with its original handwritten envelope (also in Gandhi's hand). Undated, likely c1920s. Letter measures 18.5cm x 13.4cm.  Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule, and in turn inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence. Gandhi is commonly, though not formally, considered the Father of the Nation in India, and was commonly called Bapu (Father). Provenance - from the collection of Dr Balvantrai N.
