A FINE LARGE IRISH SILVER MONTEITH BOWL, DAVID KING, DUBLIN 1715

A large plain circular monteith bowl with scalloped rim enforced with scroll mouldings above a moulded rib on a plain domed circular base. Engraved on two sides with arms, one period within a floral cartouche. Hallmarked on the underside and engraved with scratch weight 95=00 and 94=2. (Previously sold Christie’s London 26 Mar. 1930 and Christie’s NY 16 Apr. 2004 lot 140 $95600)NOTES AUTHORED BY DR. THOMAS SINSTEDENNotes: The arms are for William Hawkins, Ulster King of Arms (1698-1722) engraved around the time it was made. Arms on the other side are for Hawkins descendants engraved somewhat later. A large tazza with the Hawkins arms, also by David King is in the Metropolitan Museum NY. This monteith compares well with another by David King 1708 with the Foster arms (speaker of the house). Although one would expect this bowl to have had a pair lion-headed handles, the loss of 7 oz from its original scratch weight seems too little to account for their removal. Continued polishing and the additional engraving of later arms may explain the difference in weight.
