Virgil Brand financed the collecting interests of his cousin, Carl Wurtzbach, who formed a collection of 164 cents that were transferred to Brand in 1919. Wurtzbach was born in Germany on May 3, 1864 and died in Boston, Massachusetts on August 30, 1947. An obituary in the Berkshire County Eagle described him as a "utility and banking executive, civic improvement leader, historian, coin collector and former postmaster" of Lee, Massachusetts. At the time of his death, he was president of the Lee National Bank, having served on its board of directors for more than 20 years. His obituary further states: "One of his greatest hobbies was as a coin collector. One of the best known coin collectors in the country, he was a noted authority on Colonial coinage and large copper cents."
