CAMDEN (WILLIAM) The Abridgment of Camden's Britan[n]ia with the Maps of the Severall Shires of England and Wales, engraved allegorical title, engraved general map ('A Tipe of England'), and 48 engraved county maps (of 51, lacks Dorset, Leicestershire and Flintshire), title detached and margins slightly trimmed (not touching platemark), approximately 11 leaves gnawed at fore-edge (with loss of a few letters to 6 pages), old dampstain to these and a few others towards beginning of volume (mostly marginal, just straying within platemark of 3 maps), minor soiling throughout, nineteenth century half morocco, worn [ESTC S107395; Chubb XLI], oblong 8vo (140 x 190mm.), John Bill, 1626 Footnotes: RARE. The maps are based on those of Peter Keer (1599), and are the earliest known county maps to bear latitudinal and longitudinal markings. Provenance: Thomas Spencer, ownership inscription dated 1731 on verso of title; W. Goodbody (1823) and W. Goodbody (1861), inscriptions on front free endpaper, and other Goodbody inscriptions in upper margin of title, blank lower margin of Hampshire map and a few other places.
