GLADIATOR (2000) - Praetorian Guard Shield A Praetorian guard shield from Ridley Scott's Gladiator. Praetorian guards were the Imperial Roman soldiers tasked with protecting the Emperor, they carried these large shields along with a gladius at their hip or a spear at their side at all times throughout the movie. The shield is wood with a wooden handle and a layer of cotton canvas fabric glued on all sides; copper studs have been affixed to the outer rim, as well as, two steel crescent decals on the top and bottom of the front face. The shield is painted black and features a gold-coloured design of laurels and thunderbolts. It is finished with a vac-formed plastic boss at its centre that shows signs of breakage and repair.
