WALTER GILBERT FOR THE BROMSGROVE GUILD- A RARE LEAD FIGURE 'THE SNAKE CHARMER' CIRCA 1908 Depicted standing, playing pan pipes or 'syrinx', snake entranced encircling left arm, set on stone plinth, unmarked figure 95.5cm high, plinth 40.5cm high, 40.5cm wide This relatively rare model was illustrated on page two of The Bromsgrove Guild trade catalogue from 1908. Catalogued as "SNAKE CHARMER (b)" it was priced at 30 guineas. Please see John Davis, Antique Garden Ornament, p. 313-314 (Plate 7.28)Condition Report: Weathering and with wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. There are scratches/abrasions around extremities of the piece- including but limited to fingers, ends of coat, right hand shoulder etc.some lead shrinkage lines and marks. The hat looks to have been cast separately and then set on the head- the junction point is quite worn and notable suggesting it has been pushed/worn at this point. Some marks around junction points of different castings- left upper arm looks to have had some remedial work in the past. Pipes and serpent's tongue greener- suggesting they may have had a copper based decorative coating originally.
