1797 S-121b R3 Reverse of 1796, Gripped Edge, AU53 PCGS, CAC Approved. Very attractive glossy tan and light brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Mint frost covers the protected areas on both sides and this cent has superb eye appeal. There is a tiny planchet chip above the upper end of the hair ribbon, a shallow planchet void meandering in the field before the neck, and a thin planchet fissure left of the O in OF (all three defects as struck). The only notable contact mark is a small nick left of the numerator. LDS, Breen state IV late or V early. The die cracks on the obverse are well defined except for the one through ER, which is quite light and does not extend to the adjacent T. Graded EF45 net EF40 and CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #23598. Bland says EF45 and CC#4. This cataloger's EAC grade is EF45. A premium example of the "Reverse of 1796 with Gripped Edge" type. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Nancy & Bryan Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 2; 2 finer: 1 in 63, 1 in 65+. 35903.53/13470571.

G. Lee Kuntz resides in Claremont, California, and is a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. He completed a collection of Sheldon-numbered varieties on January 29, 1989, the eighth such collection ever formed. Superior sold his collection in October 1991. Kuntz operates Masterpiece Medallions, producers of the Early American Coppers medallions in 1981, 1992, and 1997.
