Large Cents 1840 1C Large Date, N-8, R.1, MS64 Red PCGS

Large Cents
1840 1C Large Date, N-8, R.1, MS64 Red PCGS. Grellman Die State d, showing a series of obverse rim breaks from 1 o'clock to 6 o'clock. Centering permits most or all of the rim breaks to show on this spectacular near-Gem. The famous large cent collector, Ted Naftzger, graded this beauty MS70. Bill Noyes assigns an MS67 grade and also ranks it as the finest known. Bob Grellman grades this piece MS66 and places it first in his 1840 N-8 Census. He wrote: "An excellent candidate for the 'reddest' 1840 Large Date regardless of die variety." Perhaps as much as 90% of the original, frosty mint color remains on both sides. A few splashes of steel toning on the obverse fail to diminish the extraordinary eye appeal. Population for all varieties: 2 in 64 Red, 5 finer (6/23).
Ex: M.H. Bolender (10/1955), lot 1025; R.E. Naftzger, Jr.; Naftzger Estate (Goldberg Auctions, 9/2009), lot 614.
