1794 S-43 R2 AU58 PCGS. Sharpness near mint state with extremely fine porosity covering the planchet, the roughness so fine it is barely visible even under 10x magnification. Just a light touch of friction on the very highest points of the devices. Frosty steel brown and chocolate. The only marks are a shallow nick on the lower half of the neck and a shallow flake at the right top of the E in CENT. Both marks appear to be a pre-striking planchet flaws. Sharply struck with excellent eye appeal. MDS, Heck die state 4, Breen state III. The die crack through the U in UNITED is clear and a fine crack passes through the 17 into the hair. Tied for CC#3 as AU50 in both the Noyes and Bland census lists, Noyes photo #25060. This cataloger's EAC grade is AU50. A sharply detailed, very attractive cent that comes with a long, unbroken provenance that includes many prominent collectors over the last 140+ years. The attribution is noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 3; 1 finer in 58+. 35594.58/40246165.

John Work Garrett was born May 19, 1872, and died June 26, 1942. Like his brother, he graduated from Princeton in 1895. He worked in the diplomatic service until his retirement in 1933. He donated his coin collection to Johns Hopkins University where it remained until being deaccessioned and sold at public auction in a series of four sales from 1979 to 1981, held by Bowers and Ruddy Galleries.
