China
Yuan Dynasty (Rebels). Xu Shouhui 3 Cash ND (1358) Certified 80 by Gong Bo Grading, Hartill-19.141. 32.9mm. 7.9gm. A minimally available type that only comes to auction once every five years or so, yet witnessed in this auction twice, allowing the market ample opportunity to acquire one of the more elusive pieces from the rebel leader Xu Shouhui.

Xu Shouhui, set in Hubei, established his Tian Wan kingdom in 1351. He casted Tian Qi coins, a title later used again during the Ming Dynasty. Story tells the Board of Works mint of the Ming Dynasty once sent scores of old stock Tian Qi Cash with a puzzling antique appearance. The testing officials were lost trying to explain their origin, eventually realizing the title Tian Qi had existed once before. Treasures from the W & L Collection
