[JAPAN] – [NAGASAKI & DEJIMA] – (PLAN OF NAGASAKI including the island Dejima). , Woodcut bird's-eye plan (printed in blue & black) with cartouche & legend in outer right part. (Publ. ca. 1801). Ca. 32,5 x 44,5 cm. (plan) & ca. 34 x 55 cm. (leaf). Behind passepartout & framed (behind glass). ¶ Provenance: Private Dutch collection. Very rare early 19th-cent. bird’s-eye plan of NAGASAKI (with bay & harbour partly printed in blue) including the small fan-shaped artificial island DEJIMA (or Deshima), a Dutch trading post which functioned between 1641-1854 as the only place for direct trade between Japan & the rest of the world. Our map probably based on a woodcut plan published at the end of the 18th century by Toshimaya Bunjiemon (or Bunjiyemon), but printed before a similar woodcut plan published by Bunkindô in 1802. – Horizontal & vertical folds (as publ.). Partly rubbed/ worn on folds, but nevertheless an attractive plan in an acceptable condition (not examined out of frame).
