1798 S-159 R3 Style I Hair, Small 8, AU53 PCGS. Frosty chocolate and steel brown with traces of lighter brown toning in the fields and protected areas. Peeps of faded mint color are visible at the top of the reverse. No roughness or verdigris but there are a few light contact marks on both sides. The notable marks are a diagonal nick over the bust tip, a dull horizontal nick on the chin, and a very light rim bruise over the R in LIBERTY (not visible in the holder). M-LDS, Breen state V, with vertical die cracks in the field behind the portrait but no cud breaks. Graded EF45 net EF40 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #32692. Bland says EF45 and CC#2. The finer example in both census lists resides in the ANS collection, so this piece is the finest of the variety available to collectors according to the census takers in EAC. This cataloger's EAC grade is EF45 sharpness net EF40. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label.
