German States Bavaria. Maximilian I Taler 1625 MS67 NGC,

German States
Bavaria. Maximilian I Taler 1625 MS67 NGC, Munich mint, KM194, Dav-6069, Wittelsbach-886 var., Hahn-106. Variety with lion's heads facing inwards, date divided by shield, and the Christ child's left arm raised. A coin for which the cliché "should not exist" is both wholly inadequate and yet the most accurate way to put into words just how phenomenal its quality is. Characteristically stippled throughout the obverse surfaces as are most finely preserved Bavarian Talers from this period, it is simply thrilling to admire how little contact of any consequence can be observed over the surfaces, a pristine quality fully complemented by the subtle russet elements that form the patina. While the type is known from many small varieties in the placement of the date, positioning of the lion's head's on the reverse arms, and the posture of the Madonna and child (with this particular variety missing from Wittelsbach), we would note that the most comparable piece of the same date we have offered as an MS65, which brought $3840 in our January NYINC sale.
