Lumsden (1874–1953) Alan Michael Harris Exhibited London, 56a Walworth Road, Studio Exhibition , Autumn 1937 In late 1935, Spare moved to a new studio and lodgings at 56a Walworth Road. The additional space provided opportunity for the artist to accept pupils, and by late 1937 his 'School of Draughtsmanship' was established. His studio exhibition of that year included several 'Demonstration Drawings' (catalogue nos. 150–161), of which the present lot appears to be an example. Offered here in the original frame, it is inscribed on the backboard by the artist, 'Archaic Classical aesthetic', then in Thomas Lumsden's hand, 'The development + periods of Spare. T.L. 1) A period perfect from intuition of Mozart. 2) This gradually wore out. Then a period of inferior struggling. War. Poverty. Necessity. Production to his rationalisation. 3) Analysis of his original principles. Logical working out of his original intuitional essentials. Again, perfect work, but now it will [indecipherable]...'. By 1937 Dr Thomas W. Lumsden (1874–1953) was the Director of the Cancer Research Laboratory at the London Hospital, E1, and most likely at this time, a pupil of Spare.
