In zeitgenössischem Einband des Schweinfurter Buchbinders Paul Weinmann (1547-1623).
Auf dem Vorderdeckel monogrammiert "PW" unterhalb des Mittelstücks mit Darstellung Christi als Salvator Mundi und der Devise "Hec est voluntas eigus qui fidet Filium et credit in eum non pereat". Hinterer Deckel mit Kruzifizierungs-Szene und dem Schriftzug "Sic Deus dilexit muntum ut omnis qui cretit in eum". Für die hintere Darstellung: Einbanddatenbank Staatsbibliothek Berlin, Werkstatt w002569. Auf den Ort Schweinfurt weißt auch eine auf 1625 datierte hs. Annotation auf dem hinteren Vorsatz hin. - VD16 S 6679. Adams S 1293 (mit den dort ausgeführten Varianten). - Dieses Werk blieb bis ins 18. Jh. eine der Hauptquellen zur Geschichte der Reformation aus protestantischer Sicht. - Titelbl. mit Fehlstelle im weißen Rand. Vorsätze mit zeitgen. hs. Annotationen. Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt und teils leicht fleckig. Letzte Seiten mit stärkerem Braunfleck. S. 871/872 mit unfachmännisch restaurierter Fehlstelle im Text. Vereinzelt mit Unterstreichungen. Wohlerhalten. Schönes Zeugnis deutscher Buchbinderkunst.

Pigskin over wooden boards with figural centrepieces on covers and rich ornamental and floral scroll and plate stamps (clasps missing, rubbed and bumped, some tears along edges). - In a contemporary binding by the Schweinfurt bookbinder Paul Weinmann (1547-1623). Monogrammed "PW" on the front cover below the centrepiece with a depiction of Christ as Salvator Mundi and the motto "Hec est voluntas eigus qui fidet Filium et credit in eum non pereat". Back cover with crucifixion scene and the inscription "Sic Deus dilexit muntum ut omnis qui cretit in eum". For the rear illustration: Binding database Staatsbibliothek Berlin, workshop w002569. The place Schweinfurt is also indicated by an autograph annotation dated 1625 on the rear endpaper. - This work remained one of the main sources on the history of the Reformation from a Protestant perspective until the 18th century. - Title page with loss in white margin. Endpapers with contemporary handwritten annotations. Paper somewhat browned and partly slightly stained. Last pages with heavier brown stain. Pp. 871/872 with unprofessionally restored loss in text. Occasional underlining. Well preserved. A beautiful testimony to the art of German bookbinding.
