John Holland (British, 1799–1880) Sunset on the Trent Estuary

Signed and dated 'J. Holland June 1880' bottom right, oil on canvas 36 x 70 1/4 in. (91.4 x 178.4cm) Provenance Private Estate, New Jersey. The relined canvas in overall very good condition. With several areas of flaking (relatively stabilized) at center in the water, above the boat and raft; at upper center in the sky (above the bird) as well as in the sky, center left. All relatively limited to small areas. The canvas is slightly sliding in its frame and might need stabilizing, or reframing (we see the lining along the top outer edge, and associated abrasions along the right outer edge, especially in the upper right corner). Examination under UV light reveals remnants of old greenish varnish across the bottom part of the canvas (where the land is). Not any sign of restoration: some areas (the greys, the oranges and the browns) do fluoresce, but it appears to be a result of the pigments, and the varnish, as such areas exactly correspond to the brushwork.
