Great Britain, small copper alloy Admiral Vernon medal, 1739, Vernon / Porto Bello, rare, ex-Adams, ex-Stuart. AC-PBv49XX. 6.61 grams; 27 mm. Very bold and sharp AU- in light golden color with copper-red highlights, more tin content than most, acquired by Adams well after publication of his book (hence the inferior plate piece for the variety), which reports a population of only three examples (this one presumably a fourth). XRF: 42.01% copper, 53.76% zinc, 1.47% lead, 1.23% tin. Pedigreed to the John Adams Collection (with his handwritten tag) and to the Richard Stuart Collection (Sedwick Auction 22, with original lot-tag 1242).
