1796 S-115 R3+ Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797, VF30 PCGS. Nicely detailed with excellent eye appeal but a glass reveals very fine granularity in the fields on both sides. No verdigris and the only notable marks are a hairline scratch on the bust and a dull, light nick right of the D in UNITED. Slightly glossy dark chocolate blending to darker olive brown in protected areas. EDS. The die clashmarks are clear but there are no cracks. Graded VF20 and tied for CC#6 in the Bland census. Noyes says F15 and tied for CC#10, his photo #22178. This cataloger's EAC grade is net F15. The attribution and Husak Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. John R. "J.R." Frankenfield was a native of Jamestown, New York, who moved to Florida and began a construction business at a young age, following two years in the Army. His company was active in the development of the Miami, Florida area. He was the ninth collector to complete a set of Sheldon-numbered varieties, including the great rarity S-79. He also formed extensive collections of half cents and later-date large cents. Another of his hobbies was travel, with a goal of visiting every one of the 3,142 counties in the United States, taking a photo of the county courthouse in each locale. Superior Galleries sold the Frankenfield Collection in February 2001.
