A Great War ‘Western Front’ D.C.M. group of four awarded Private to E. Thynne, 10th Battalion (Hull Commercials), East Yorkshire Regiment, for gallantry in the attack on Gars Brugghe Farm east of Foret de Nieppe on 28 June 1918 Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. R.) mounted as worn, good very fine (4) £1,000-£1,400 --- D.C.M. London Gazette 30 October 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an advance this soldier was ever in the forefront of the attack. When the advance was delayed at a farm that was determinedly held by the enemy, he rushed forward through heavy machine-gun fire and forced his way into the buildings. Pte. Thynne captured three prisoners; the remainder of the garrison retired precipitately. The final objective having been reached, he volunteered to take back the information to battalion headquarters. After making his way through a heavy hostile barrage, he safely delivered his message, together with a most useful account of the precise situation and the requirements of the front line. His behaviour throughout was distinguished by brilliant gallantry.’ Annotated gazette states: ‘E. Forest of Nieppe, 28 June 1918. Ernest Thynne was a native of Felling-on-Tyne and went to France with the 1st Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment on 2 November 1914.
