Large Cents 1798 S-166 R1 Style II Hair, Large 8, MS62 Brown PCGS

Large Cents
1798 S-166 R1 Style II Hair, Large 8, MS62 Brown PCGS. Glossy chocolate brown and steel with mint frost covering the protected areas. Traces of lighter golden tan toning faded down from mint color show around the portrait. Sharpness close to mint state but there is a trace of friction on the highest points of the devices. A spot of lighter toning below the lower end of the hair ribbon and a tick under the left side of the L can help identify this cent. MDS, Breen state III, with die clashmarks and the usual crack on the lower left of the reverse, but the small rim cud over ST has not formed. The drapery on the bust tip is poorly defined, as usual for this variety. Graded AU55 and CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #23234. Bland says MS60 and tied for CC#2 in his census. This cataloger's EAC grade is AU55. The attribution and Husak Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; 4 finer: 2 in 63, 1 in 63+, 1 in 64. 36068.62/13457932.

John Pickering Lyman was a Boston resident and banker for the Webster and Atlas National Bank. Lyman was born at Portsmouth, New Hampshire on February 18, 1847, graduated from Harvard in 1868, and died at Boston on November 1, 1914. His collection was sold in November 1913 by S.H. Chapman who commented: "Every piece shows the work of the engraver unmarred by the buffetings of circulation." His name figures prominently in early U.S. coinage including the provenance of 1801, 1802, and 1803 proof restrike dollars and the Adams 1804 dollar.
