Large Cents 1807/6 S-272 R4+ Overdate Small 7 over 6 AU55 PCGS

Large Cents
1807/6 S-272 R4+ Overdate Small 7 over 6 AU55 PCGS. Glossy chocolate and olive brown with underlying mint frost, especially in protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and quite glossy thanks in part to a very thin layer of "Care" or some similar protectant. This cent has mint state eye appeal but there is a trace of friction on the highest points of the devices. The only notable marks are a pair of small nicks high on the neck and a dull nick just right of the date. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state II, with fine die clashmarks on both sides. There are microscopic die polishing lines in the obverse fields and sharp pantograph lines on the portrait, clearest in the drapery and on the bust. The obverse is slightly misaligned to K-9 and the reverse is off center a bit to K-12. A sharp, very attractive example of this classic rarity. It is graded AU50 in the Noyes and Bland census lists, and it has been recognized as the undisputed finest known example of the variety for a century. Noyes photo #20999. This cataloger's EAC grade is AU50 as well. (The other PCGS AU50 piece listed in the PCGS population report is clearly inferior to this one and is graded EF40 by Noyes and Bland.) Both sides of the piece offered here are plated in the 1934 Clapp reference on the cents of 1804-1814, in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy, and in the 1991 Noyes reference. An important prize for the collector who wants the finest example of this tough "Redbook" variety. Comes with an outstanding provenance that has been traced back more than 100 years. A highlight of this wonderful collection. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 2; none finer. 36439.55/13470624.
