FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY CHRISTINA ROSSETTI: '
Mrs. Epps, with C. G. R's love.' Here Christina Rosetti gifts to Ellen Epps a first edition of one of her father's books of poetry. Ellen Epps and her husband, Dr. John Epps, were friends of the Rossetti's and had a villa where Christina and the family would sometimes visit. Ellen was one of three sisters: Emily, who trained with the Pre-Raphaelite, John Brett, and Laura, second wife of painter Lawrence Alma Tadema. The book has extensive marginalia in pencil which appear to be attempts at translating various words from Italian to English. There is a pencil inscription below the presentation: '
This is in the handwriting of the poet Christina G. Rossetti. E.E.'
