COLONIAL AMERICA/ENGLAND. George III. 1760-1820. Copper 18th

COLONIAL AMERICA/ENGLAND. George III. 1760-1820. Copper 18th century imitative halfpenny. 8.68 gm. 29 mm. Overstruck (↑↓) on a Mail Coach halfpenny, D&H Middlesex 363 (die alignment ↑↑). The mail coach piece was struck circa 1797. A closely related variety, Msex 364, is dated 1797. So this overstrike had to have occurred later. Bust of George III right over an obverse showing MAILCOACH HALFPENNY and the lead horse pulling the coach / Britannia seated left. Anton 26 (He notes that "About seven specimens have been seen.") Very Fine; attractive example, perhaps finest known; better surfaces than the example sold in CNG's 2013 Triton XVI sale and a better portrait than the example shown in Anton. It is much better than the muddled piece offered by Stack's Bowers at the 2018 ANA Auction (Obverse Fine, reverse only Good. Unsold). It is also superior to the example illustrated on page 46 of the 2018 publication Contemporary Counterfeit Halfpenny and Farthing Families. (Roger Moore, et al. Colonial Club Collectors of America).
