Victoria gold "Shield" Sovereign 1886-S MS64+ PCGS, KM6, S-3885B, Marsh-82 (S). The nicest example for this type we have ever had the pleasure of handling; the previous example we sold near this caliber, in base MS64, was five years ago and fetched $4,080. The offering at hand exhibits beautiful, shimmering fields with only occasional wisps and marks. Judging from the minute die cracks at the base of Victoria's bust and in the surrounding legends, the dies were already in a later stage, perhaps also witnessed by the slight softness of the Irish harp on the reverse. Regardless, the sole finest specimen across both grading agencies and extremely desirable as such.
