Charles V gold Franc a Pied ND (1364-1380) MS66 NGC, Paris mint, Fr-284, Dup-360. 3.79gm. KAROLVS x DI x GR | FRAnCORV x RЄX (poorly struck), crowned, mantled figure of Charles standing facing beneath a Gothic dais, sword in right hand, scepter surmounted by Hand of Justice in left / +XPC ★ VIИCIT ★ XPC ★ RЄGИAT ★ XPC ★ IIIPЄRAT (poorly struck), cross fleury with crowns and lis alternating in angles within quadrilobe; lis in spandrels. Issue from 20 April 1365. A type of instantly astonishing quality. Rarely is so prolific an issue as Charles V's Franc a Pied locatable in top-pop status, and yet this is just what has occurred here--out of 166 certified representatives of the issue seen across both NGC and PCGS, just two others have achieved MS66 status, with the last that we offered achieving an astounding $9000 as part of our July 2019 sale of the Morris Collection. Though the legends are badly doubled with a strong die shift, the quality of the piece is simply undeniable, its finish crisp and lustrous to the extreme. Simply a must for the connoisseur and almost certainly one of the finest extant.
